ARTIST’'S STATEMENT
Because each of these collages is first concerned with solving a design problem, a theme or story or message is only loosely formed at the outset. As the pieces of scraps and cast-offs are being arranged and assembled a theme may occur, or it may not arrive until the design is complete. And because the process is first concerned with design not every piece of material used may have something to do with the theme that develops. This makes for incongruity and incongruity only entices the viewer’s attention.
It usually turns out that the theme is one that deals with nostalgia, calling up images of bygone years, lost memories, forgotten occasions or perhaps recollections of ancient toy boxes. The building of these collages is time spent in quiet intimacy and something I find quite soothing, in part because most of the collages are postcard sized.
